JOHN PRATT MOSAIC HOUSE NEEDS YOUR HELP

Shards of pottery, broken china and mirrored tiles shimmer in the sun and in the nighttime headlights of motorists traveling across Michigan’s Highway 20 west of Midland. Tucked into a wooded lot sits the John Pratt Mosaic House, a Michigan folk art treasure that has been owned by Creative 360 since soon after John Pratt’s death in 1997. Since then, his mosaics have been enjoyed by thousands of visitors, and it continues to attract interest. Creative 360 needs help to get the house ready for visitors who can remain socially distanced in the outdoors while enjoying art.

“Each spring, we visit the house to determine what needs to be done and normally reach out to school groups for help,” said Creative 360’s Interim Executive Director Carol Speltz. “Schools are closed this year, but we still need to get the job done.”

Unfortunately, there is even more work to be done this year. In addition to the normal spring grounds clean up, mosaic pieces need to be re-attached and painting needs to be done. After many years of escaping graffiti, a recent visitor added their own art to the house. “The art is beautiful,” Speltz explained, “but this is John Pratt’s house. Sadly, we must paint over it to restore the house to what it is intended to be.”

Creative 360 is scheduling clean up events to ensure all social distancing protocols are in place. Volunteers will be socially distanced and masks are encouraged. “We want everyone to be safe as we preserve the artful display John Pratt left behind for us.”

The first clean-up day is planned for Tuesday, June 2 at 6:00 p.m. Rain date: June 3 at 6:00 p.m. Those interested in helping on this or future dates are asked to call Creative 360 at 989-837-1885 and leave a message or respond to the event posting on the Creative 360 Facebook page.
