At the beginning of 2024 year, I set a simple intention: to engage in art as a regular person.

My grandma died the previous October. She was the kind of person who would break into song in the middle of a conversation. She wrote poetry because it made her happy. She encouraged her sons to be artists and musicians, and she extended that same encouragement to all of us. Art, to her, wasn’t precious or performative—it was part of being alive.

So that January, I decided to honor her by bringing art back into my everyday life. Not to monetize it. Not to perfect it. But remember that art makes us human, connects us to our essence, and to one another.

I looked through the C360 catalog and signed up for the earliest available art class. It happened to be watercolor. At the time, I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since elementary school.

That one decision changed my daily rhythm.

I’ve been painting nearly every day since. Every morning, before I start my workday, I sit down with my paints. Sometimes what comes out is pretty. Sometimes it’s blobs. Sometimes I’m surprised by how it turns out. Sometimes I laugh at how bad it is. And every single time, it fills my cup.

Watercolor has become a mindfulness practice for me.

Somewhere along the way in modern society, we decided that art only has value if it can be monetized, polished, or proven worthy. We placed it on a pedestal and told ourselves that unless we were exceptional, it wasn’t worth attempting.

But that’s not how art lived in my grandma’s world.

She told stories about nights on her porch while her dad played the fiddle and the family sang together. She mailed poems back and forth with cousins across the country. She decorated her space with shells, rocks, and bits of glass—creating beauty from whatever brought her joy. Art wasn’t separate from life; it was woven into it.

Watercolor has quietly taught me a few things.

It has taught me to let go of perfection. Watercolor has a mind of its own. Sometimes the plan doesn’t work—and sometimes what happens instead is better.

It has taught me to keep going. The paintings I end up loving the most often look terrible in the middle. That moment when something feels ruined is often just part of the process. All I’m really “wasting” is paper. The value is in the doing, not the final result.

It has taught me to let things flow.

It has taught me to share my art even when it will never make me any money.

And it has taught me to celebrate mediocrity. I’ve even added “mediocre watercolorist” to my resume. In a culture that relentlessly pushes us toward unachievable perfection, choosing mediocrity feels like an act of rebellion—and a deeply freeing one.

Eventually, these reflections turned into an invitation: to hold space for others to paint together. Not as a teacher, but as a fellow participant. A space holder. Someone who believes that creativity belongs to everyone—especially those who think they “aren’t artistic.”

I share a few technical basics when helpful—how watercolor blends when wet, why light colors come first, how taping the edges can change the experience—but none of it is the point.

The point is community.
The point is care.
The point is mindfulness.

The point is remembering that making art doesn’t have to be impressive to be meaningful.

So I keep painting.

Not to get better—though sometimes I do.

But to stay human.

Honoring the Legacy of John Pratt at Creative 360

At Creative 360, we are honored to celebrate and share the incredible story of John Pratt, a visionary artist from Midland, Michigan, whose work continues to inspire creativity, resilience, and connection. John was no ordinary artist; he was a creative force who transformed his family home at 102 E. Isabella Road into a living masterpiece now remembered as the John Pratt Mosaic House. Every inch of his home became his canvas, adorned with vibrant mosaics made from shards of glass, broken pottery, mirror tiles, and stones.

For John, art was much more than a creative outlet; it was his sanctuary, his voice, and his way of navigating life’s challenges. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, John faced significant mental health struggles that eventually brought him back to his childhood home after a career in New York City. During particularly difficult times, his inner voices left him silent, yet his mosaics spoke volumes. Each piece he created told a story of resilience, transformation, and the pursuit of beauty amidst the struggles of life.

A Second Home for Creativity and Healing

John’s vibrant creativity found a natural home at Give Me Shelter, an integrated arts center that was the inspiration for Creative 360’s Express Yourself Artshop program. Known for showing up in a colorful clown costume, John reminded us all to create freely and without fear of judgment.

After his passing in 1997, John left his mosaic-covered house to Community Mental Health, which later entrusted it to Creative 360. We immediately understood its importance - not just as for its artistic value but as a tangible symbol of John’s story and the profound connection between art and healing. Covered floor to roof in colorful mosaics, the house stood as a testament to John’s vision, resilience, and the therapeutic power of creativity.

Preserving the Legacy of the Mosaic House

Sadly, due to structural and safety concerns, the house itself could not be saved and was demolished in October 2023. However, we were determined to preserve as much of John’s art as possible. With great care, we salvaged most of the mosaic panels, ensuring that John’s artistry, and the stories woven into it, would not be lost.

Today, these beautifully restored panels have a permanent home in our Jefferson Avenue gallery, where they are proudly displayed for the community to experience. Admission is free, and we invite everyone to come and view these extraordinary works of art. Each mosaic offers a window into John’s soul, capturing the emotion, creativity, and hope that defined his life and inspired his work.

In Mid-Michigan, one such innovative production is Broadway Flight, a dynamic approach to musical theater that offers audiences a taste of various Broadway shows in one seamless experience. We had the pleasure of speaking with our very own Laura Brigham, the brilliant mind behind Broadway Flight, who shared her inspiration and how the Flight has flourished.

The Birth of Broadway Flight

Laura Brigham’s journey in the theater world began long before she conceptualized Broadway Flight. Coming from a professional theater background, she found herself in a new community where long-term theater commitments weren’t always feasible for people with busy schedules or family responsibilities.

“I had small children when I moved here, and there weren’t a lot of opportunities for short-commitment productions,” Laura explained. Having experience with cabarets—performances that feature a collection of songs without a unifying storyline—she started hosting them at Creative 360 and the Midland Center for the Arts. These cabarets became quite popular, offering performers a chance to participate in a low-commitment but high-energy experience. However, as more theaters started embracing the cabaret format, Laura sought to bring a fresh idea to the stage.

“I wanted to create something that balanced storytelling with a short time commitment,” she said. The idea of Broadway Flight was born—a performance based on the concept of a wine or beer flight, where audience members could sample a variety of Broadway songs in one evening. Adding an actual wine flight was an obvious next step.

This format not only gave theatergoers a chance to explore music from different productions but also helped promote lesser-known shows to a wider audience. “Many times, people skip seeing a production simply because they don’t recognize the title,” Laura explained. “With Broadway Flight, they get a taste of different shows, making them more inclined to see a full production in the future.”

Finding and Showcasing Talent

One of the key aspects of a Broadway Flight is the commitment to featuring a mix of both seasoned performers and fresh voices. Laura makes it a priority to include new talent in every production, aiming for at least 50% of the cast to be first-time participants.

“This area has some of the most talented performers I’ve encountered,” she noted, acknowledging that while finding talent is easy, scheduling and availability can be challenging. With many performers juggling multiple commitments, coordinating rehearsals and ensuring reliability remains one of the trickiest aspects of production.

To address these challenges, Laura actively scouts for new talent: identifying potential performers, and then reaching out to them personally. “I go to shows, circle names in programs, and think, ‘Who can I recruit?’” she shared. Her dedication to nurturing and uplifting voices within the community has played a significant role in the show’s continued success.

The Growth and Future of Broadway Flight

Since its inception, Broadway Flight has only gained momentum. Audience attendance has steadily increased, driven by word of mouth and the excitement surrounding each new performance. “People come once, have a great time, and bring their friends the next time,” Laura explained. The constant influx of new performers also expands the show’s reach, as each cast member brings their network of supporters.

With approximately ten Broadway Flight productions completed, including a newly launched youth edition, Laura sees no shortage of material for future shows. “There are so many incredible Broadway musicals out there, whether they are well-known classics or hidden gems,” she said. “We have endless possibilities.”

As Broadway Flight continues to evolve, its impact on the local theater scene is undeniable. By offering an accessible, exciting, and innovative way to experience musical theater, both for performers and for audiences, Laura Brigham has created a format that not only entertains but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the art form. Whether you’re a theater enthusiast or just looking for a fun night out, Broadway Flight promises to be an unforgettable experience—one taste at a time.

While many of the performers hail from the Tri-City area—including Midland, Bay City, Saginaw, and Freeland—Broadway Flight has drawn talent from even further afield. Past productions have included performers traveling from Kalamazoo, Flint, and Ann Arbor, as well as individuals who once lived in the area but returned specifically for the opportunity to perform. “I’m always excited about bringing in new people from different distances,” says Laura.

College Connections and Community Collaboration

Although Broadway Flight doesn’t officially partner with local colleges, it has organically become a space for students from Central Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Delta College to showcase their talents. ”We have featured many CMU students in the productions, and there are a couple in the next show. We have also recruited SVSU students, and I’m currently in talks with a Delta College student about participating.” The production thrives on these connections, often welcoming new performers through word-of-mouth and personal recommendations. “I’ve met so many people who love to perform but can’t commit to a six- or eight-week show. Broadway Flight gives them a home to express their passion.”

In addition to individual student participation, Broadway Flight is exploring partnerships with other organizations to enhance its productions. Past productions have featured guest performances from Elite Dance in Singin’ in the Rain , Lux Women’s Choir in Titanic , Harmony Diversity Choir in Wicked , and the Girls Choir from the Center for the Arts in Dear Evan Hansen . These collaborations add a special touch to each show, offering unique and memorable experiences for both performers and audiences alike.

Looking to the Future

What does the future hold for Broadway Flight? While there are no immediate plans for drastic structural changes, the focus remains on making each production unique and continually engaging new voices.

The Youth Broadway Flights have become a vibrant extension of our long-standing Broadway Flights series, spotlighting the talents of young actors in han exciting, fresh way. Recent productions, including highlights from Cinderella , Alice in Wonderland , and Shrek , were a huge success and brought so much energy to the stage. The opportunity to give talented young actors a chance to shine was met with an outpouring of enthusiasm from audiences and participants alike. The strong turnout and glowing reviews highlighted the community’s excitement for youth-focused performances.

The response has been so overwhelmingly positive that we’re thrilled to announce there will be more Youth Broadway Flights this year! We’re excited to continue fostering young talent and create opportunities for these rising stars to take center stage.

With an ever-expanding network of performers, partnerships, and creative ideas, Broadway Flight remains a vital part of the local arts scene—one that continues to grow, inspire, and bring people together.

It was Jazz’s creative inspiration that led to the unique design of the set for the first ever Performance in the Park this past September.

Beyond the brush, Jazz’s work is about the people. Their art creates a sense of belonging and encourages every one of us to see the beauty in life and community. The ability to blend bold, captivating visuals with meaningful stories makes Jazz a treasured artist who helps shape not just Midland but the entire Tri-Cities area.

2. Valerie Allen – Podcaster and Advocate for the Arts

When it comes to making waves in the art world, both here in Midland and beyond, Valerie Allen stands out as a creative powerhouse. An artist, educator, and advocate, Valerie has had an incredible year, full of projects that not only inspire, but also give back to the community and the broader world of art.

One of Valerie’s most exciting ongoing endeavors is her podcast Art Ladders: The Creative Climb , which she hosts with her husband and fellow artist, Armin Mersmann. Now, in its third year, the podcast is nearing 89 impressive episodes! Through this platform, Valerie has built a bridge between local and global art communities, connecting listeners to ideas, advice, and interviews with accomplished artists. It’s the perfect blend of insight, inspiration, and encouragement for artists at any stage of their creative climb.

This past year, Valerie took her artistry to a whole new stage—literally. She collaborated with conductor Fouad Fakhouri and the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra to perform a live painting during a concert. The result? A stunning piece of art that will be auctioned this spring, with proceeds benefiting the Symphony. This fusion of sound and visuals brought a fresh, interactive perspective to the world of classical music and was a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Valerie’s impact doesn’t stop there. With sponsorship from Golden Artist Colors, she presented art workshops for nonprofit groups and schools throughout the Midwest. One standout event included her hands-on session with the National Conference of Artists Michigan Chapter during their “Just Paint Experience”—a beautiful moment of connection and creativity.

True to her generous spirit, Valerie launched an artist scholarship this year for her upcoming “Abstraction Now Online Class.” It’s all part of her #artistshelpingartists mission, which reflects her belief in uplifting other creatives. Her generosity doesn’t end there. She also donated paintings to support Mittens for Detroit and the Saginaw Arts and Enrichment Commission, ensuring her work has a meaningful community impact.

One of Valerie’s most exciting local contributions this year is her new public gallery, located within her studio space at Geisler Enterprises in Midland. 3. Allise Noble– Creative 360’s Artshop Program

Allise Noble isn’t just an artist; she’s a visionary who’s transforming Midland’s art scene with creativity, inclusion, and heart. Her work has become a beacon for community engagement, bringing art out of traditional spaces and immersing it into the everyday lives of residents. From her contributions to the "Outside the Box" initiative to the Neighborhood Bench Project, Allise is helping to redefine what public art means for the Midland community.

Through the "Outside the Box" project, Allise has used her artistic skills to turn bland utility boxes into vibrant murals. These once-overlooked structures have become storytelling platforms, blending her appreciation for nature and creativity with the unique character of Midland. Her designs not only enhance the city’s aesthetic but also encourage residents to pause and engage with their surroundings on a deeper level. These artworks act as symbols of hope and connection, reminding us that beauty lies within the details we might otherwise take for granted.

4. Jordan Townsend – Matchbox Tattoo and Community Fundraiser

Jordan Taylor : A Midland local who grew up in the Bullock Creek area, Jordan is a self-taught traditional artist who has been tattooing for over a decade. Her work not only leaves a lasting impression on her clients but also on the wider community through her dedication to education, mentorship, and charitable efforts.

Last year, Jordan took her passion for art and tattooing into the classroom, speaking at local schools and symposiums to share the benefits of pursuing trade careers. She provided young people with invaluable insights into starting a career in tattooing, building strong art portfolios, and staying creatively inspired in a fast-paced world. For many students, hearing firsthand about the opportunities within tattooing and the broader arts was an eye-opening and empowering experience.

Jordan’s giving spirit shines just as brightly as her artistry. Each year, she donates original artwork to the Safe and Sound (now Midland Child Advocacy Center) Child Advocacy silent auction, where her contributions help support an organization making a real difference in the lives of children. But perhaps her most heartwarming initiative last year was the Toys for Tots charity event she hosted. Clients brought in $60–$100 worth of toys in exchange for tattoos of equal value, and Jordan successfully raised over $3,000 worth of toys for Midland-area children. Talk about spreading holiday cheer in the most creative way!

Looking ahead to 2025, Jordan shows no signs of slowing down. She’s focused on continuing her educational talks to inspire the next generation of creators and plans to expand her charity tattoo events even further. Her calendar is filling up, but she’s making time for big, exciting goals. She’s currently training a tattoo apprentice, ensuring that her legacy of clean, professional artistry continues. She’s even preparing to offer tattooing services for unique events like weddings—imagine having Jordan’s talent at such a special moment!

Jordan is also deeply involved in bringing more art to our public spaces as she works with Public Arts Midland. On top of that, she’s dedicating time to produce new artwork with a goal of applying for solo art shows in 2026. It’s clear she’s on a mission to keep pushing creative boundaries while giving back to the community she calls home.

Public Arts Midland and Creative 360 Bring Performing Arts to Grove Park

On Saturday, September 7th, Public Arts Midland and Creative 360 will bring the performing arts outside to all of Midland with the first ever Performance in the Park event. Local actors will bring the hilarious The Comedy of Errors to life in a whole new way, supported by the talents of a wide range of performing groups from the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The event will kick off at noon on Saturday, September 7th with the first of two performances of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy, followed by the White Pines Celtic Bagpipers at 2:30 pm, a sword fighting demonstration by The Friction Theatre Company at 3:00 pm, a devised performance based on a modern Shakespeare by EVOC productions at 3:30 pm, a presentation of Indian Dance with Sangeeta’s Dance & Music of India at 4:00 pm and Vanishing Elephant Players presenting Shakespeare sonnets at 4:30pm. Throughout the day our traveling troubadour, Brightyn Jude, will wander and entertain with guitar, ukulele and vocals and a live woodworking demonstration will add to the fun. The second performance of The Comedy of Errors will start at 5 pm.

The catalyst for the event, which marks the first of many annual performances in the park, was a partnership between Public Arts Midland, an initiative of the Midland Area Community Foundation, and Creative 360, a local non-profit arts and wellness center. The Grove Park site was chosen for its central location and accessibility, particularly with the recent opening of the Changing Places fully accessible restroom facilities in the park.

“Our vision is to produce Shakespeare that is accessible to everyone, and we have a special twist to the original play that will definitely increase understanding and make you laugh,” said the show’s director, and Creative 360’s Performance Events Coordinator, Laura Brigham. “The Comedy of Errors is the perfect show for everyone. It is big and silly and filled with mistaken identities and physical comedy.”

The two performances of The Comedy of Errors are free of charge and will take place at Grove Park in Midland, MI on September 7th at 12pm and 5pm. All other groups will perform between 2:00-5:00. Molly McFadden & Friends to Perform Classics from the American Songbook at Creative 360

– On Friday August 23, at 7:00 PM Creative 360 is thrilled to host a special evening of timeless music with Molly McFadden and Friends on the stage at 5501 Jefferson Ave. The group, featuring pianist David Smith and bassist Roland Wallace, will perform a selection of beloved standards from the American Songbook captivating audiences with their renditions of classic tunes.

Molly McFadden, a talented vocalist and actress who has spent her life performing throughout the country, and who is known for her smooth and soulful interpretations, will be joined by an ensemble that promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, bringing to life the works of legendary composers such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and many more. It is a perfect opportunity for music lovers of all ages to enjoy some of the most cherished melodies in American music history.

McFadden, former owner of Molly’s Bistro, also returns to Midland to bring her passion project “Living on the Moon” to the community in a performance at the Midland Center for the Arts. The piece focuses on raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease using storytelling and puppetry. A story that dramatizes her journey caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s and her current experience facing a diagnosis that could progress to Alzheimer’s.

Creative 360 Honors Mrs. Puppets, Cheryl Levy, With Blood Drive

On Thursday, June 20th from 1-6 pm, Creative 360 will be hosting a blood drive at their 5501 Jefferson Avenue location in honor of local arts supporter Cheryl Levy.

Levy is a long-time supporter of Creative 360 and a beloved teacher of many classes including the recent Grandma Goose Summer Camps. She was a librarian at Grace A. Dow Memorial Library for 19 years, where she created magic with puppets. In addition, Levy has directed many Peanut Gallery plays at the Midland Center for the Arts and has designed and taught acting camps for children for many years.

In January, Levy was diagnosed with severe anemia, requiring numerous blood transfusions. Around the same time, the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage. When Levy was asked what friends could do to help, she replied that those interested in helping could proactively help others like her by donating blood.

“When we saw that Cheryl was asking for blood donations, we jumped at the chance to help,” said Creative 360 Executive Director, Laura Vosejpka. “Cheryl and her husband, Larry, have been long time supporters of our arts non-profit and we are so happy to be able to offer this opportunity for the community who loves her to donate blood in her honor.”

Hath Summer Players present “Father of the Bride” at Creative 360

July 11, 2024, Midland, MI.

– Wedding mayhem and family mishaps abound in Hath Summer Players’ production of “Father of the Bride”, July 18th through 21st on the Creative 360 stage.
Based on Edward Streeter’s 1949 best seller, this classic comedy revolves around the Banks family, whose 21-year-old daughter, Kay, makes a surprise announcement that she and her boyfriend, Buckley, are going to be married.

Kay and Buckley have different ideas of a “small” wedding. Meanwhile, Mrs. Banks wants her daughter to have a perfect wedding, and Mr. Banks struggles with his little girl growing up and the ever-growing cost of the event. Add in a colorful wedding planner, his assistant, and a sassy family housekeeper and you have all the ingredients for a delightful performance filled with romance and humor.

The cast includes Maxwell Teall, Grace Armstrong, Jocelyn Perez, Wyatt Brown, Albin Reeder, Sam Rosin, Abigail Peters, Abby Price, Cody Ridder, Mae Reim, and Jessica Ashland.

“I love “Father of the Bride” because the real-life humor is relatable to almost everyone,” said the play’s director, Peter Brooks. “And it is not just laughs. By the end of the show, we are reminded that the relationships in life are what really matter.”

Kevin Cole and Friends Celebrate Bonnie Sitter on August 4th

– On August 4th, Creative 360 will host a special afternoon musical soiree celebrating the 94th birthday of Midland accompanist and music director Bonnie Sitter.

Sitter has shared her gift for music with many community groups, including Creative 360, Music Society, Theatre Guild, Teenage Musicals Inc., Midland Center for the Arts, and more, playing more than 100 musical shows. Music Society and Theatre Guild presented a joint Lifetime Achievement Award to Sitter at a Community Theatre Awards event in 2008, citing her 40-plus years of dedication to the organizations.

The musical program will be led by nationally acclaimed pianist Kevin Cole and will feature several of Bonnie’s talented musical friends from the Great Lakes Bay Region. Cole has delighted audiences with a repertoire that includes the best of 20th-century American music. Scholars have called him the “best Gershwin pianist since Gershwin himself.”

“We are so excited to celebrate Bonnie with these incredible artists,” commented Laura Vosejpka, Creative 360 Executive Director. “Bonnie is not only a wonderful supporter of our organization, she is also a dearly loved friend.”

The concert will take place on Sunday, August 4th from 3:00 to 5:00pm. Light refreshments will be served after the concert. Tickets are $20 prepay and $25 at the door. This is a fundraiser, and all proceeds from this event go directly to support Creative 360.

Synergy: A Fusion of Earth, Wax, and Light' Opens August 1st

Creative 360 will host the opening reception for the exhibit ‘SYNERGY: A Fusion of Earth, Wax, and Light’ on Thursday, August 1 at 7pm.

The exhibit features the work of ceramicist Kerri (KATT) Griggs, encaustic artist Kristianne Tefft, and photographer Marilyn Whitworth Soules. “It is an honor to feature the work of these talented artists whose mediums are different but whose passions are aligned,” remarked Curator Colleen Reed. “This is an exhibit that has something special for every visitor.”

The opening reception, which takes place August 1st from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., is open to the public at no charge. The exhibit will be on display at Creative 360’s 5501 Jefferson Ave Gallery from August 1 through September 6. The art center is grateful for donations that allow it to open the gallery to the public at no charge for entrance. Call for weekend and evening hours.

at 15th Annual Artfest Opening

The 15th Annual Artfest 55, featuring the work of regional writers and artists aged 55 and older, opened Friday, June 14th at Creative 360. The exhibit features the work of more than 80 visual artists and writers from across the state.

“Artfest 55 is a very popular exhibition and features remarkable work,” said Colleen Reed, Creative 360’s program director and curator. “We had nearly 130 art and writing submissions from all over Michigan. Entries were strong in all categories and that makes for a truly compelling show.”

Jurist for the Visual Arts was Professor Robert A. McCann of the Department of Art, Art History & Design at Michigan State University. Jurists for the written work in the exhibit were writers Sarah Yoder, and Luana Russell, both Midland Public School teachers who are now retired and poet and SASA instructor Jared Morningstar.

“It was such a pleasure to spend time with all of the works submitted to this show,” said jurist Robert McCann. “Art is a kind of practiced obsession, whether observed in intricate planning and labor or realized in flashes of inspiration. The artwork in this show has such admirable diversity, depth, and creative ambition.”

Winners were announced in the following categories:

Writing:

Best Poetry – “A Quickening: by Sarah Gorman from Midland.

Best Memoir – “The Couch Wars” by Sharon Withers from Saginaw.

Best Short Story – “Portrait of a Dog” by Jeannie Dellar from Midland.

Visual Arts:

Best Photography – “Old Soldiers Never Die” by Mark Winslow from Standish.

Best Two-Dimensional Art – “Special Delivery” by Daryl Griggs from Midland

Best Three-Dimensional Art – “Gathering Basket” by Marti Liddle Lamenti from Sanford.

Best in Show – “In my Head” by Julie Wells from Harrison.

Honorable mentions included:
